Value follows close behind at prices that undercut most specialty rooms in the area, and the atmosphere holds up on the roasting equipment and bean sacks alone. The Space
LAVA sits inside a plain, easy-to-miss building in Xinzhuang, the kind of storefront that gives nothing away from the street. Inside, professional roasting equipment and stacked coffee bean sacks fill the room, coffee aromas doing more to sell the place than the facade ever could. Seating runs to several tables plus one big communal one.
The Coffee
The cappuccino was the right early call, built on a Panama Janson lot that came through with real jasmine and a hint of melon, single origin and clearly labeled on a bean list worth reading properly. The cinnamon rolls with caramelized walnut looked like the better pastry order, alongside a wider bean selection than the room's size would suggest.
It looks like a building you would walk straight past. The cup is the reason not to.
The Vibe
A working roastery more than a lounge, and it reads that way, equipment and bean sacks doing the decorating. Closed both weekend days, so this is a weekday find only.
The Verdict
Easy to miss and worth the detour regardless. A genuine Steep Pick for the cappuccino and the bean list alone, just do not plan a Saturday visit.
