Where to work in Tokyo: the 30 cafes that actually let you

62 of the 119 cafes we have reviewed in Tokyo have no wifi. 73 will not thank you for a laptop. These 30 are the exceptions.
Tokyo is one of the best coffee cities on earth and one of the hardest places to open a laptop.
We have reviewed 119 cafes here, every one of them in person. 62 have no wifi at all. 73 are rooms where a laptop would be tolerated at best. Only 30 clear all three bars that actually matter for working: wifi that exists, a room that does not mind a screen, and enough staying power that nobody starts hovering at the ninety minute mark.
That gap is not an accident.
Why Tokyo is like this
Rent is charged by the square metre and most specialty cafes here are small. A ten seat room cannot carry a customer who buys one filter coffee and stays four hours. Some owners solve that with time limits, some with deliberately hard chairs, some by never installing wifi in the first place.
There is a cultural inheritance underneath it too. The kissaten tradition treats a cafe as a room for coffee and conversation, not an office, and plenty of newer shops have kept that posture on purpose. A no laptops sign in Tokyo is rarely hostility. It is a house rule about what the room is for.
The best coffee in Tokyo and the coffee you can work next to are almost entirely different lists.

Meguro has the deepest bench with eight of them. goodcoffee学芸大学 by goodroom scores 9.0 for staying power, the highest of any cafe in the city, and 9.0 for solo. Bloom.by Swell Coffee Roasters in Himonya matches it on solo. Also here: Byron Bay Coffee Company in Ohashi, both Alpha Beta Coffee Club rooms in Jiyugaoka, ONIBUS in Nakameguro and Jiyugaoka, and SCHOOL BUS COFFEE STOP in Aobadai.
Shibuya has seven. VERVE COFFEE ROASTERS YOYOGI PARK is the one to beat, 8.8 staying and 9.0 solo with the park directly across the road. Sedai Coffee Hatagaya turns into a wine bar in the evening, which is either a feature or a warning depending on your deadline. Then Fuglen Tokyo, Alchemist Aoyama, Coffee Supreme Tokyo, Roasted COFFEE LABORATORY and KOPI KALYAN.
Minato has three and all of them are strong: Little Darling Coffee Roasters, Streamer Coffee Company Azabujuban, and Common in Roppongi.
Chiyoda is the quiet surprise. No.4 in Yonbancho scores 8.8 on both axes, and COMFORT STAND in Ichibancho is built for weekday work. Both are closed at the weekend, which tells you exactly who they were designed for.

Where not to bother
This is the part worth knowing before you carry a laptop across the city. Nadoya no Katte, the highest scored cafe on our entire Tokyo list at 8.8, has no wifi and is not a laptop room. Neither is Koffee Mameya, or KOFFEE MAMEYA Kakeru, or OGAWA COFFEE LABORATORY, or SELECTION Coffee, or Cafe de l'Ambre. Vannelli Coffee has wifi and is still not the place.
None of that is a criticism. Those rooms are doing something more interesting than hosting your inbox.
Go to them for the coffee. Go with a notebook, or with nothing at all, and let the room be what it was built to be.
