Brother Baba Budan
Melbourne CBD · Melbourne · Steep Index 9.1/10 · Steep Pick

One of the heavyweights of Melbourne coffee, a tiny Seven Seeds room with wooden chairs hanging from the ceiling and a flat white to match.
The Steep Index
The flat white leads by a wide margin, with exacting temperature and milk. Atmosphere follows on the hanging chairs, while staying power is the soft axis for a tiny room where plenty of people take their coffee to go.
- Coffee / Drink Quality: 9.5/10
- Atmosphere: 9.3/10
- Solo-Friendliness: 8.9/10
- Value: 9.0/10
- Staying Power: 8.6/10
- Overall: 9.1/10
Perfect for: espresso pilgrimage, impressing someone
The Space
When we visited in April 2016 this was already one of the best known cafes in Melbourne, a small room on Little Bourke Street. Look up and you see wooden chairs hanging from the ceiling.
The Coffee
There are no fancy drinks here, just the classic flat white, and it was well balanced with the temperature and the milk both exacting. It is what a flat white is supposed to taste like.
No fancy drinks. Just a flat white that tastes the way a flat white should.
The Vibe
The room is tiny and full of character, and it fills up with tourists and locals alike. The turnaround is fast, and plenty of people take their coffee to go.
The Verdict
Order the flat white and do not overthink it. Take it away or find a spot under the chairs, because the line moves quickly either way.
