Stovetop — Melbourne

A posh, stylish Carlton brunch cafe with a vibrant room, a Melbourne menu with Asian, Italian and Middle Eastern touches, and good coffee.

The Steep Index

Atmosphere leads, a vibrant and lively room that is good for people watching. The coffee is good but not exceptional, and solo-friendliness takes the hit from a room that gets crowded and sometimes loud.

  • Coffee / Drink Quality: 7.9/10
  • Atmosphere: 9.0/10
  • Solo-Friendliness: 7.4/10
  • Value: 8.2/10

  • Overall: 8.2/10

Perfect for: brunch, people watching

The Space

We reviewed Stovetop in April 2016, and it has been renovated and expanded since, so the room has likely changed. When we visited it was a very posh, stylish cafe on Leicester Street in Carlton.

The Coffee

The menu was typical Melbourne brunch with Asian, Italian and Middle Eastern touches, including sweet and savory croissants. The coffee was good but not exceptional.

Come for the brunch and the buzz in the room.

The Vibe

The atmosphere was vibrant and lively, and sometimes a bit loud, with tourists and locals filling the room and weekends the busiest. Service was good and the staff were convivial. It is a good spot for people watching.

The Verdict

Come for the brunch and the vibrant room, not for the coffee. The venue now lists weekday hours only, 8am to 3pm, so go on a weekday and book a table.
