Kabutocho, Coffee to Wine

Tokyo · 2–3 hours · afternoon

Two coffees and a natural wine bar inside 138 metres, in the old stock-exchange district that quietly turned into somewhere you would linger. Go from three in the afternoon, when all three are finally open at once.

The route

  • 1. SR Coffee Roaster
    Nihonbashi Kabutocho, Chuo

Start here, and start before five: this one shuts at 18:00 while the other two run late. Swedish micro-roastery with far more room than central Tokyo usually allows. The coffee is good rather than remarkable, so take the Basque cheesecake with it.

  • 2. Coffee bar & Shop coin
    Nihonbashi Kabutocho

Fifty metres on, and down into a former bank basement. Coffee by day, craft beer and gin later, which makes it the hinge of this walk. The iced chai is the safer order than the coffee.

1 min walk to the next stop

  • 3. Wineshop Human Nature
    Nihonbashi Kabutocho, Chuo

Finish standing up. A natural wine shop with a kakuuchi counter, roughly 300 mostly European labels, and records that are doing half the work. It does not open until 15:00 on weekdays, which is why this route runs on afternoon time.
