Ahiru Store

Yoyogi-Uehara · Tokyo · Steep Index 8.0/10

Ahiru Store — Tokyo

A warm, obsessively curated natural wine bar in twelve seats. The list is all-natural and short by design, cash only, and better on the second visit than the first.

The Steep Index

Drink quality scores 8.0 rather than higher because the all-natural list, while carefully chosen, is deliberately narrow — expect two or three pages, not a wine programme. Value reflects the cash-only policy and ¥¥¥ pricing, a genuine barrier for tourists without yen in their pocket. Atmosphere and Staying Power remain high because twelve seats and bottles on every surface is still one of the better rooms in Tokyo.

  • Coffee / Drink Quality: 8.0/10
  • Atmosphere: 9.0/10
  • Solo-Friendliness: 7.5/10
  • Value: 6.5/10
  • Staying Power: 9.0/10
  • Overall: 8.0/10

Perfect for: slow evening, first date, impressing someone

The Space

Twelve seats. Bottles covering every surface. A handwritten list that changes every few days.

The Pour

Natural wine from small producers across France, Italy, Georgia. The staff know every bottle and will talk about them all night if you let them.

You come for one glass and stay for the conversation you did not expect to have.

The Vibe

Locals, wine professionals, the occasional overwhelmed tourist who walked in by accident and stayed.

The Verdict

A genuine wine bar with a considered list and a room that gets better as the evening goes on. The cash-only policy and narrow selection keep it from the top tier, but on the right night with the right bottle it earns every seat.

    Meguro · Steep Index 8.8/10

California-born chef Katy Cole opened this eight-seat Meguro natural wine bar and hand-threw every ceramic piece in it. Around sixty bottles, mostly Savoie and Rheinhessen, ten by the glass, in a room that looks like a Georgia O'Keeffe painting had good taste in wine.
