Mermaid Coffee Roasters Ikebukuro

Higashi-Ikebukuro, Toshima · Tokyo · Steep Index 8.3/10

Mermaid Coffee Roasters Ikebukuro — Tokyo

A quirky three-floor roastery a few minutes east of Ikebukuro Station, where the interior does as much work as the coffee and the homemade cookies quietly steal the visit.

The Steep Index

Coffee scores high because they roast in-house and the light roast has a real fruit character rather than a suggestion of one. Atmosphere is the standout: three floors, each with its own idea of what it wants to be, and none of it feels like it was designed by committee. Solo works well on a weekday when you can pick a floor and disappear into it. Value is fair for this quality in central Tokyo, and staying power is good as long as you avoid the weekend crowd.

  • Coffee / Drink Quality: 8.5/10
  • Atmosphere: 8.7/10
  • Solo-Friendliness: 8.2/10
  • Value: 8.2/10
  • Staying Power: 8.1/10
  • Overall: 8.3/10

Perfect for: reading, people watching, impressing someone, espresso pilgrimage

The Space

Three floors inside a plain building on a Higashi-Ikebukuro side street, each done up with a different idea, from resort to something closer to a small art gallery. It is quirky in a way that could easily have tipped into gimmick, and somehow does not.

The Coffee

The light roast iced latte carries a clean fruity note that survives the milk, which is the hard part and the reason to trust the roasting here. Pair it with the matcha or earl grey cookie, both made in house, because the cookie is what turns a good coffee into a reason to come back.

The cookies are not an afterthought. Order one with the light roast and the whole visit rearranges itself around them.

The Vibe

Staff are genuinely warm and know their beans well enough to talk you through them without performing. It fills up fast on weekends, so come on a weekday if you want the place to feel like the hideaway it is trying to be.

The Verdict

Mermaid Ikebukuro could have coasted on the interior and did not. Come on a weekday, take the light roast, and do not skip the cookies.
