Along the Meguro River

Tokyo · 3–4 hours · afternoon

Follow the canal from Nakameguro into Daikanyama and down into Aobadai — three rooms with nothing in common except quality and the same ten-minute radius. Ends at a listening bar that turns into something else after six.

The route

  • 1. ONIBUS COFFEE Nakameguro
    Nakameguro, Meguro

The original Nakameguro location, upstairs with a view over the train tracks and the canal below. ONIBUS roasts in-house and the espresso is among the more consistently good in west Tokyo. Arrive early on weekends — the window seats go fast.

  • 2. Blacksheep Espresso
    Daikanyama, Shibuya

Walk up from the river into Daikanyama and find the Schemata Architects interior that makes Blacksheep feel like a design project before you have ordered anything. Terraform Coffee sourced, well extracted. The affogato is one of the better versions in the city.

8 min walk to the next stop

  • 3. epulor
    Nakameguro

Eight minutes from Daikanyama into Aobadai, and the room changes completely. A narrow listening bar built around a sound system — trip hop, acid jazz, whatever the night calls for. Cafe mode until 18:00, then an ¥800 cover charge and a different kind of afternoon. Come for the coffee and stay for what happens when the light drops.
