A strong score built on genuine craft rather than spectacle. The coffee programme is considered without being showy — in-house roasting, honest pricing, a cortado that does exactly what it should. Atmosphere is the real differentiator: KALM has achieved the quiet that most cafes claim and few deliver. Solo-friendliness is among the highest in Tokyo, helped enormously by a neighbourhood that has no interest in performing for anyone. Value is exceptional for the quality level.

The Space
Oyamadai is three stops from Jiyugaoka on the Tokyu Oimachi Line — a train most visitors to
Tokyo never board. KALM occupies a modest two-floor building on a residential street that has no particular opinion
about what is happening in Aoyama or Daikanyama.
The Coffee
The cortado arrived at ¥520, which is honest pricing for espresso that is already doing
something on its own before the milk appears. KALM roasts in-house under two named blends — Morning Sun and
Nighthawks — and the Basque cake, on the days it appears, is worth ordering without deliberating.

The Vibe
Solo workers settle in without apology. The name is the concept and the concept is the
execution.
The Verdict
KALM is the kind of cafe that people who live nearby mention carefully, to the right people.
