The Space
Ground floor of a Nishitani Building side street with enough objects on the walls that you stop trying to count them. When it fills up there is overflow seating across the street, which sounds strange until you are sitting there with a pour-over watching Matsubara go by.
The Coffee
They roast in-house, which shows in the cup — choose the medium roast if you want to understand what they are doing, fruity and cleaner than the neighbourhood setting would lead you to expect. The beans are available to take home, which most people should probably do.

The Vibe
Locals who found this before anyone else did, the occasional person who came for the aesthetic and stayed for the coffee, and staff who are warm without making it a thing. Baby and dog friendly, which tells you something about the kind of place it is.
The Verdict
Mermaid Matsubara gets better once you stop trying to make sense of the decor and just drink the coffee. Come on a quiet weekday, take the seat across the street if it is sunny, and order whatever they roasted last.
