Cafes and bars in Nihonbashi Kabutocho, Tokyo
Tokyo's old stock-exchange district, and one of the more unlikely places in the city to have turned into somewhere you would linger. The finance blocks are still here, but so is a Swedish micro-roastery, a coffee bar down in a former bank vault, a natural wine shop playing records to whoever is standing at the counter, and the first Japanese outpost of a Swedish brewery. Two of those share a seventy-year-old building that used to be an eel restaurant, which is about as neat a summary of what happened to this block as you will get. Four very different rooms inside a few minutes' walk, none of them trying to be a coffee street.
