Paul Bassett
Nishishinjuku · Tokyo · Steep Index 6.9/10

A polished basement cafe in the Nomura Building named after a 2003 World Barista Champion, where the interior earns its reputation more convincingly than the espresso does.
The Steep Index
Atmosphere earns 8.0 for a genuinely elegant underground space with a skylight that makes you forget you are in a basement. The coffee score of 6.0 reflects a flat, milk-forward espresso that does not live up to the World Barista Championship pedigree on the branding. The egg and spinach croissant is the most honest thing on the menu and worth ordering. Solo-Friendliness and Staying Power both sit at 7.0 for a space that is comfortable without being particularly compelling.
- Coffee / Drink Quality: 6.0/10
- Atmosphere: 8.0/10
- Solo-Friendliness: 7.0/10
- Value: 6.5/10
- Staying Power: 7.0/10
- Overall: 6.9/10
Perfect for: working alone, slow weekend
The Space
The basement level of the Shinjuku Nomura Building, fitted out with European cafe styling and a skylight that pulls in enough natural light to make the underground setting work. Well designed for a chain, and noticeably quieter than the streets above.
The Coffee
The latte reads more as warm milk than espresso, the kind of flat, soft extraction that is hard to reconcile with a brand built around the name of a World Barista Champion. The egg and broccoli croissant, however, is genuinely good and the clearest reason to make the detour.
The room is better than the espresso, and the croissant is better than both.
The Vibe
Professional service, a polished chain atmosphere that keeps the edges smooth, and a crowd of Shinjuku office workers and shoppers who are here for the room and the food as much as the coffee. Quiet enough to work in, comfortable enough to stay.
The Verdict
Come for the croissant and the basement escape from Nishishinjuku. If the espresso programme ever catches up to what the branding promises, this becomes a different kind of recommendation. For now, order the food.
