The atmosphere and solo scores carry the card, driven by a rooftop that opens up somewhere you would not expect in Oyamadai. Coffee is honest and well-made. Value is strong for the quality on the plate, and the handmade pies set a bar that most food-led cafes in Tokyo do not come close to.

The Space

Third floor of a red brick building in quiet Oyamadai, with a rooftop terrace that gives you a surprisingly open view over the Setagaya neighbourhood. Compact inside with around a dozen seats, but the terrace is where you want to be when the weather holds.

The Coffee

The flat white is well-pulled and properly textured, the kind of coffee that does exactly what you need it to do without any fuss. Order it alongside the pulled pork pie or the chocolate cookie and you have a pairing that earns the trip from wherever you are in the city.

The pulled pork pie is the reason to make the trip. The rooftop is the reason to stay.

The Vibe

Weekend-only and run by husband and wife team Kif and Noriko, Punk Doily has the warmth of a place that exists entirely on its own terms. Solo visitors are well served here — the rooftop invites the kind of sitting still that most of Tokyo does not make room for.

The Verdict

The Australian pies are the headliner and the pulled pork is the one to order first. But the rooftop, the flat white, and the chocolate cookie make a strong case for staying well past the first bite.
