SAMAA_
Kamiuma, Setagaya · Tokyo · Steep Index 8.0/10

A 70-year-old Setagaya house, renovated into a cafe with high ceilings and big windows by a founder who spent a decade at Blue Bottle. No wifi. Bring a book.
The Steep Index
Coffee scores high because the pedigree is real: ten years at Blue Bottle produced a founder who understands extraction and the pourover program at SAMAA_ reflects it precisely. Atmosphere is the strongest number on the card because a 70-year-old building with visible structure, high ceilings, and generous windows is a room that most cafes cannot manufacture regardless of budget. Solo scores low by design: no wifi is a deliberate choice and the space makes clear it is not built for laptop sessions. Value is fair for Setagaya. Staying power is moderate for the same reason as solo: the room rewards a long, undistracted visit but the absence of wifi means that visit has to be on its own terms.
- Coffee / Drink Quality: 8.9/10
- Atmosphere: 9.1/10
- Solo-Friendliness: 6.2/10
- Value: 8.1/10
- Staying Power: 7.5/10
- Overall: 8.0/10
Perfect for: reading, slow weekend, no laptops
The Space
A 70-year-old house in the residential backstreets of Kamiuma, renovated into a cafe with high ceilings, big windows, and an honesty about the structure of the building that makes it one of the most distinctive rooms in Setagaya.
The Coffee
The founder brought a decade of Blue Bottle experience into a focused extraction-method coffee program, with pourover and espresso work that takes the sourcing seriously. The bagels from étéco bakery are the right food to order with it, and the Indonesian jammu herbal drinks are worth trying if you want something outside the coffee program.
The founder spent ten years at Blue Bottle. The building is 70 years old. Neither fact is incidental.
The Vibe
No wifi, cashless only, and dog-friendly. The room draws the Kamiuma neighbourhood and people who found it on Instagram and arrived prepared to actually stop. The staff are warm without performing it.
The Verdict
SAMAA_ is not the place to work through a to-do list, and it knows that. Bring a book, leave the laptop, and let two hours pass without noticing.
