Coffee earns a high score because the Melbourne DNA is genuine: Sedai roasts its own single-origin lots alongside Allpress Espresso from New Zealand, producing espresso and filter work that carries a distinctly antipodean precision in a Tokyo scene dominated by Japanese and Nordic influences. Atmosphere is the strongest argument for the venue: a converted underground parking structure with raw concrete walls and warm wooden counters, designed without apology for the Hatagaya neighbourhood it sits in. Staying power is the headline number because an 8am coffee opening that runs through to an 11pm natural wine close makes this one of the longest useful days in Tokyo. Solo and date formats both work cleanly in the same room. Value is honest for what is on offer: ¥1,100 by the glass for Italian natural wine with 100+ bottles behind the counter is competitive anywhere in the city.

The Space
Sedai took over the converted underground parking structure of THESTEPS, a mixed-use Realgate complex in residential Hatagaya, and turned raw concrete walls and warm wooden counters into exactly the kind of room the neighbourhood deserves. The design does not try to be anywhere else, which is the right call.
The Coffee
Melbourne-origin Sedai roasts its own single-origin lots alongside New Zealand's Allpress Espresso, giving the cup a distinctly antipodean specialty character that stands apart in Tokyo. The latte and matcha are both worth the trip, and the croissant sandwich sourced from Pan no Iderio in Kiyosumi-Shirakawa is the kind of thing you finish and immediately wish you had ordered twice.
Coffee at 8am. Sicilian orange wine at 10pm. Same room, same counter, no interruption.
The Vibe
By mid-afternoon the coffee programme hands over to hebeerryk! wineshop, a natural wine importer running around 100+ bottles of Italian and Japanese wines with 5 to 10 available by the glass daily from ¥1,100. The transition is seamless — the room does not change, only what is in the glass. The crowd shifts from laptop workers and coffee regulars to couples and neighbourhood wine people, all of them in the same concrete space without any friction.
The Verdict
Sedai Coffee Hatagaya solves a problem most venues do not admit they have: how to be genuinely excellent at two different things without either one feeling like an afterthought. Open at 8am for one of the best coffees in Shibuya, still going at 11pm for a bottle of natural Sicilian red. Hatagaya is lucky.
