The iced Melbourne Morning, a fruity Colombian with notes of milk chocolate and apple, was talked through in detail by the barista before it even arrived, and the Yuzu Cold Brew that followed was the best version of that drink found anywhere in Tokyo. Atmosphere dips slightly only because the shopfront itself is easy to walk past, nondescript from the street in a way the coffee and service inside never are.

The Space
SELECTION Coffee is a single counter with six seats in Nihonbashi Horidomecho, easy to miss from the street since nothing about the exterior announces what is happening inside. There is no food or pastry menu yet, though one is reportedly in the works, and the whole space is built around the counter conversation rather than around lingering.
The Coffee
SELECTION Coffee does not roast its own beans. Instead the team curates a rotating lineup sourced from roasters around the world, with a particular focus on Melbourne and Sydney collaborations, and the lineup changes as the monthly menu does. The iced Melbourne Morning was a fruity Colombian, talked through by the barista as they poured it, with real notes of milk chocolate and apple that showed up exactly as described. The Yuzu Cold Brew that followed was the more memorable of the two, executed with the kind of precision that made it, easily, the best version of that drink tried anywhere in Tokyo.
This is what fourth wave cafe service actually feels like.
The Vibe
The team here is engaging and genuinely knowledgeable, the kind of staff who want to talk through flavor notes rather than just hand over a cup. It is an ideal spot to come alone, sit at the counter, and actually talk to the people making the coffee. The menu and signature drinks rotate monthly, so what is on offer today will not be what is on offer next month.
The Verdict
SELECTION Coffee is a small room doing a big thing well: seasonal, considered coffee explained properly by people who clearly care about it. Come for a seat at the counter and expect to leave having learned something about what you just drank.
