Caliente Vintage Culture — Tokyo

Caliente Espresso is an espresso counter tucked into a vintage clothing store, and curiosity about that pairing is what got us through the door.

The Steep Index

Coffee narrowly leads atmosphere, Caliente Espresso is the real draw here, a small counter squeezed into the corner of a vintage clothing store's entrance that's hard to walk past once you know it's there. Staying power is the deliberate low point, there is no seating anywhere in the store, this is a counter you order from and carry your cup back into the racks. Solo and value sit in the middle, neither commented on directly.

  • Coffee / Drink Quality: 8.7/10
  • Atmosphere: 8.9/10
  • Solo-Friendliness: 7.7/10
  • Value: 7.9/10
  • Staying Power: 7.0/10
  • Overall: 8.0/10

The Space

Caliente Vintage Culture runs one of the larger vintage floors in Kichijoji, a room of North American secondhand clothing and goods a short walk from Inokashira Park. Tucked into the corner of the entrance is Caliente Espresso, a single small counter with no stools and nowhere to sit, the reason we stopped by in the first place.

The Coffee

The Gibraltar was the order, strong and well balanced in equal parts espresso and milk, genuinely good for a coffee counter bolted onto a clothing store's front door. There is no seating and no food menu, it is handed over and you walk it straight into the racks.

The reviews warned us about the staff. Nobody warned us about the espresso.

The Vibe

The store's own reputation online runs rough on customer service, which is exactly what made the espresso counter worth checking despite it, an unexpected pour inside a vintage floor not usually associated with serious coffee. The racks are there to browse if you want, but the counter is what pulled us in.

The Verdict

Go for Caliente Espresso, order the Gibraltar, a genuinely good pour from a small counter inside a vintage store with a rough service reputation online. The vintage floor is worth a browse afterward, but the coffee is the actual reason to stop.
