LIGHT UP COFFEE Kichijoji

LIGHT UP COFFEE Kichijoji — Tokyo

An in-house roastery tucked off Kichijoji's busiest streets, selling beans and tasting sets alongside a latte that undersold them.

The Steep Index

Solo and atmosphere lead, a small, warm room built for a quiet read away from Kichijoji's main streets. Coffee is the deliberate low point: a Shyira Rwanda latte where the milk buried the bean's actual punch. Value and staying hold up in the middle, matching a shop whose real strength may be the beans you take home rather than the cup you drink there.

  • Coffee / Drink Quality: 6.8/10
  • Atmosphere: 8.8/10
  • Solo-Friendliness: 8.9/10
  • Value: 7.7/10

The Space

LIGHT UP COFFEE sits a few minutes off Kichijoji's main streets, on a quieter stretch past the Nakamichi-dori crowds. The room is small and cozy, built around a counter where the staff roast, brew, and sell the beans themselves.

The Coffee

The latte ran on a Shyira, a washed Rwandan bean from one of the country's highest washing stations, and the milk buried whatever punch that bean actually had. The canele alongside it held up better than the drink did.

The beans tasted better on the shelf than they did in the cup.

The Vibe

Warm, unhurried staff and a genuinely quiet room make this an easy place to sit alone with a book. It's the kind of stop Kichijoji's busier streets don't leave much room for.

The Verdict

The shelves of beans and tasting sets suggest LIGHT UP COFFEE takes the coffee itself seriously. The latte we tried didn't carry that through, so buy the beans, brew them yourself, and treat the counter as a room to sit in rather than the reason to come.
