The Space
A compact stand on a Nezu side street, fitted out in exposed concrete and warm wood with seating on raw log stumps that should feel uncomfortable and somehow does not. The second location from the team behind the original Honkomagome spot, and the Nezu address suits them. The neighborhood is quiet and residential in the way that part of Bunkyo manages to be, even a short walk from the station.
The Coffee
The espresso tonic is the order. Cold, clean, with enough bite from the espresso to hold its shape against the tonic without turning bitter. The STAIN BLEND runs as a house roast alongside three rotating single origins, and the hand-drip is made carefully enough to justify the wait. The cardamom roll is moist and well-spiced, and pairing it with the tonic is not an accident. Order both.

The Vibe
The staff are genuinely warm in a way that is not performed. You are welcomed in, told what is good, and left to settle. Seating is limited by design, which in practice means the room never feels crowded, and the turnover is gentle. Solo visitors are the natural fit here. Nobody is hovering, and nobody is in a rush.
The Verdict
COFFEE STAIN 根津 is a small room doing the specialty coffee thing well, in a neighborhood that earns a detour on its own. The espresso tonic, the cardamom roll, and a staff that seems pleased you came. Come on a weekday morning and take the long way back.
