The Steep Index

Wine and pour quality scores 6.5 — the natural wine selection is sourced from Wineshop Ethelvine in Kyoto, a credible starting point, but the by-glass offering does not yet translate that credibility into the glass. The citrus and rum ice cream arrived with a gritty texture that the flavors could not fully recover from. Atmosphere earns 8.5 for a compact, earth-toned room in Nishihara that manages to feel calm despite its footprint, with a neighborhood that does a fair amount of the work. Strong for a first date. Less obvious for solo.

The Space

A small, paint-washed room with earth-toned walls and a minimal interior that keeps the attention on what is in the glass and the cone. Seating is limited and some visitors stand, which in practice prevents the space from feeling crowded. The Nishihara address is a quieter pocket of Shibuya, and the room reads as a considered extension of the neighborhood rather than something dropped into it.

The Pour

The natural wine list is sourced from Wineshop Ethelvine in Kyoto, a thoughtful provenance, though the by-glass selection on the night did not carry that credibility into the pour. The citrus and rum ice cream was the more anticipated order and arrived with a gritty texture that undercut the flavor profile, present but not cohesive. The pairing concept between the scoop and the glass is sound, and the seasonal flavor rotation suggests the kitchen is still working through what it can do.

The idea, ice cream and natural wine in a quiet Shibuya side street, is exactly correct. The pour and the scoop need a few more iterations.

The Vibe

Popular and handled well despite the footprint. The staff manage the traffic gracefully in a room that does not have much room to manage anything. Nishihara brings a residential ease that most of Shibuya cannot offer, and Kasiki earns that setting. A strong choice for a date. Specialty coffee and tea are available for those not ordering wine, which broadens the afternoon use case.

The Verdict

The ice cream and natural wine concept is a good one, and Tokyo is the right city for it. Kasiki has the right neighborhood, the right look, and a clear sense of what it is trying to be. The product needs to close the gap between the idea and the glass. Worth watching as the menu develops.
