The Space
Tucked into a back alley off Koenji's Look Shopping Street, with six indoor seats, outdoor benches along the lane, vibrant green walls, and high ceilings that make the room feel bigger than it is. The cups are handmade by the owner, which tells you something about how this place is run.
The Coffee
Lighter roasts than most Tokyo shops, closer to Nordic profiles, letting the beans speak rather than the process. The seasonal single-origins rotate constantly and the pour is precise without being theatrical about it.
Six seats, owner-made cups, and a pour that makes you want to stay. Koenji has always had this kind of place.
The Vibe
Bilingual staff, a mix of locals and the internationally curious, and an energy that stays easy whether you come alone or with people. On Fridays and Saturdays they stay open until midnight and the natural wine from Hokkaido comes out.
The Verdict
Walnuts only opened in late 2023 and it already has the feel of a neighbourhood fixture that has been there for years. The coffee is the best thing about it, but not by much.
