The Space
A five-storey community building directly above Shimokitazawa Station that holds a cinema, coworking floors, shared offices, an event terrace, and GRASS, the cafe that anchors everything on the second and third floors. Airy, well-lit, and built for people who want to be somewhere for more than twenty minutes. Around 80 seats across two floors, power outlets throughout, and wifi clocking over 200 megabits per second. The kind of space that does not exist in most cities and is somehow perfectly at home here.
The Coffee
The coffee programme runs through Kitasando Coffee, and the cold brew is the thing to order: nutty, clean, and built for sitting with for an hour. The espresso drinks are consistent and honest. The sweet treats hold their own alongside the coffee — the Mont Blanc and the cookies in particular are worth ordering with whatever you choose to drink.
The building does more than one thing and does all of them well. That is rarer than it sounds in Tokyo.
The Vibe
The staff are genuinely friendly in a way that is not always a given in Tokyo, and the room reflects that energy. Solo visitors are extremely well served: high-speed wifi, power outlets at most tables, and the ambient presence of a room full of people who also came to stay a while. The K2 Cinema one floor up adds a cultural dimension to what could otherwise just be a coworking box with decent coffee.
The Verdict
The concept carries more weight than most cafes attempt, and it delivers. Come for the cold brew and the solo energy, and plan to stay longer than you thought. The cinema upstairs is the reason to come back on a different day entirely.
