Seven stops, one block, barely a minute between any of them. This corner of Shibuya packs an absurd density of coffee and matcha into a 277-metre loop. Nobody expects you to drink all seven, so treat it as a menu of a block rather than a march through it.

Open on a genre change before any coffee. A Kyoto matcha stand doing real justice to its Ujitawara sourcing, bench seats in and out. Expect a short wait, it moves fast.

A New Zealand roaster holding its own on one of Tokyo’s most contested blocks. First real cup of the walk, and a fair benchmark for everything that follows.

3. CAMELBACK sandwich&espresso

Right next door, close enough that you barely need to look up from your cup. A takeout counter with limited bench seating out front. Order the caramel latte and the egg sandwich together, the sandwich does not come any other way, and the pairing is the whole point.

4. Beasty Coffee [ cafe laboratory ]

A considered little room with the same care in the design as in the cup. Try the matcha terrine if it is still on the counter.

Up a narrow staircase above a small clothing shop, a genuine hidden gem. Try the coffee and the matcha both, the room alone is worth the detour.

The anchor, and the Oslo import that put this block on the map. Mid-century Nordic calm and unhurried filter coffee, or a Nordic cocktail if you have arrived after six.

Close on the best cup of the seven. A pedestrian-only street, a counter facing the bar, and an affogato of dark roast espresso over soft serve dusted with grounds. Take the terrace if the weather allows and stop walking.
