A dark, posh coffee bar inside the Station House, with a balanced, chocolate-and-berry flat white and staff who will talk about the beans.
The Steep Index
Coffee leads on a flat white that was balanced and carefully made, and solo is close behind in a clean room with sofas and quiet music. Value is pretty decent, and staying power is strong with this much seating.
- Coffee / Drink Quality: 9.3/10
- Atmosphere: 9.1/10
- Solo-Friendliness: 9.2/10
- Value: 8.0/10
- Staying Power: 8.7/10
- Overall: 8.9/10
Perfect for: working alone, reading, espresso pilgrimage, slow evening, impressing someone, first date
The Space
Bad Mother sits on the first floor of the Station House, and the room is dark and posh without being pretentious. There is plenty of seating, sofas included, and everything is clean.
The Coffee
I had a flat white made with a blend called The Natural, from Black & White Coffee Roasters in Raleigh, North Carolina. It had outstanding chocolate and berry notes that never took over, and the cup was balanced and well crafted. The staff are happy to talk about the coffee, and the shop rotates guest roasters, so ask what is on. They also run pour overs and private tastings, which I have not tried yet.
The chocolate and berry notes were there without shouting.
The Vibe
Soothing, ambient music sits low enough not to get in the way. The staff are convivial and coffee focused, and they answered every question I had about the beans.
The Verdict
This is a strong room for working alone, reading or doing nothing, and the flat white earns the trip by itself. Come back for the pour overs and the tasting.
