Deep work alone, wifi that actually works

Solo-Friendliness first, filtered to venues that actually have wifi and welcome a laptop — not just ones that happen to be quiet.

• Brown Sound Coffee Steep Pick
Tsudanuma, Narashino · Chiba · Steep Index 9.3/10

A compact, carefully considered specialty cafe in Tsudanuma with latte craftsmanship that has no business being this good in a room this small. The best reason to come to Narashino.

• Baobá Café Bica Steep Pick
Bica, Cais do Sodré · Lisbon · Steep Index 9.1/10

A Brazilian family farm grows the beans in São Paulo, ships them to Lisbon, and roasts them on-site on a narrow Bica street beside the funicular. The specialty espresso is €1.50. This is, without argument, one of the best reasons to be in Cais do Sodré before 9am.

• Komet Café Steep Pick
  Kungsholmen · Stockholm · Steep Index 9.1/10

Stockholm's best cafe, full stop: exceptional filter coffee and espresso, homemade pastries that set the neighbourhood standard, and staff who make you feel like a regular on the first visit.

Parte Vieja · San Sebastian · Steep Index 9.0/10

The roastery behind the best cappuccino in Parte Vieja.

• Leads Coffeehouse
West Tampa · Tampa · Steep Index 9.0/10

A spacious, homey cafe in West Tampa with free, fast wifi and plenty of tables, a good place to work or sit on your own, held back by a burnt-tasting latte.

• Gypsy Souls Coffeehouse St. Pete
Downtown St. Petersburg · St. Petersburg · Steep Index 9.0/10

A locally owned roaster-cafe on MLK Street North with strong free wifi, long communal tables, a homemade chicken sandwich and an overnight cold brew worth ordering.

• FARO渋谷神南店
Jinnan, Shibuya · Tokyo · Steep Index 9.0/10

A plant-filled sandwich cafe tucked into Jinnan, where the Roasty sandwich and a well-made iced latte make a convincing case for slowing down after Shibuya has worn you out.

• Porcupine Cafe Steep Pick
Ari, Phaya Thai · Bangkok · Steep Index 9.0/10

Porcupine Cafe is the antler-hung, decade-old institution that still feels like Ari's best-kept secret, even though everyone already knows about it.

• Ruda Café Steep Pick
La Latina / Lavapiés · Madrid · Steep Index 9.0/10

A small specialty café hidden in the narrow streets of La Latina, near the Rastro market, with rotating single-origin coffees and baristas who can actually tell you why they chose the beans on the counter.

• BROWN Coffee Roastery Steep Pick
Kamishakujii, Nerima · Tokyo · Steep Index 9.0/10

A small in-house-roastery cafe doing genuinely good espresso in a corner of Nerima that has almost none, worth the trip out from central Tokyo.

• Toma Café
  Malasaña · Madrid · Steep Index 9.0/10

One of the original specialty roasteries in Madrid, running out of a small Malasaña room since 2011. The flat white is honest, the cinnamon pastry will cost you a second coffee, and the solo experience is better than most.
